School Link in Belgium

Kampong Kantuot, November 29th, 2010

To the director of Het Schoolhuis in Belgium

Dear Director

I have a pleasure to receive a good news informed by VVOB that my school has been chosen to be a partner school. Of course, I don’t known much yet about the culture and civilization in your country, but I do know that your country is one of the developed countries in the world.

I would like to introduce my school briefly…
The name of my school is Hun Sen Kampong Kantuot High School. It is situated in Svay Ming Village, Bakou Commune, Kandalstung District, Kandal Province in the southern of Cambodia. It is approximately 27 kilometers from the capital city of Phnom Penh. It is a rural school and has a total area of 35,183 m2. Our school has a big agriculture terrain of 8,736 m2.

I think you know that my country used to have a civil war with the Khmer Rouge for over two decades, and most kinds of infrastructure were completely destroyed between1970 to 1979. My school was also one of the most damaged ones. Fortunately we opened the school in 1980 again, students and teachers helped to renovate the buildings and we developed gradually. Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen provided money to construct four new buildings and supported us with many educational materials.

In this school year, the school consists of 13 buildings, including 36 classrooms, one office for the school management and teachers, and one dormitory for the teachers who live far away to go home. The total number of students (from grade 7 to 12) is 2,295, from which 1,002 are girls. The number of teachers is 123, with 58 female teachers, one director and three deputy-directors.

Office of the school
As you probably know, all our teachers and the students live in the countryside. In general, they earn their living through farming. In the rainy season, most paddy fields are dark green but now December is approaching, so most paddy fields become yellowish. It is a sign that the harvest season is arriving. At our school, we set up a vegetable garden for students recently. We want to promote and teach them how to plant vegetables without using chemical fertilizer. It is a new project in our school, but all students and teachers like this a lot.

Our school also has a scouts group of 160 scouts (from which 79 girls). They help to improve the school discipline and environment.

Some times we try to organize study visits with our students. On January 6th, 2009, His Excellency Hing Bun Heang supported them in a study tour at the Preah Vihear Temple.

We also have some sports activities. On February 9th, 2009, the volleyball team of the school won the first prize of competition in Kandal Province.

Last year we also had an important visit at our school…
On April 1st, 2009 Mrs. Grace Fu, the vice minister of Education and Development of Singapore, visited our school.

All the teachers and students are looking forward to meet you and your team anytime; we hope we will always have good relationship with your school. Moreover, we will also look forward to exchange our experiences

In realized, I am not good at using internet, and I hope this skill will be developed through our communication.

So far, on my behalf of the school principle, teachers and students of Hun Sen Kampong Kantuot High School, I would like to bless you, your family and your colleagues with the Buddhist wishes: long life, happiness, wealth and strength for always. Thanks!

Yours faithfully,

Mr. Tep Yen
Director of Hun Sen Kampong Kantuot high school
